9 Tips To Win The Morning

If you want to win in life, you have to win the day, which starts with winning the morning.

The way you wake up each morning sets the tone for the day.

So how can you wake up happier, with more energy, and ready to crush the day?

Try using some of these 9 easy to implement tips to win the mornings and start your day off right.

  1. Make Your Bed: My mom always told me to make my bed in the morning. It took this speech from US Navy Admiral William McRaven to realize why it was so important. As he says, making your bed first thing in the morning gives you a sense of accomplishment. You’ve now completed your first task of the day. It creates positive momentum so you get rolling and are ready for the next task.

  2. Show Some Gratitude: Stop saying “I’m so tired,” to yourself first thing in the morning! You are alive and you get the opportunity to do whatever you want with the day ahead. Try shifting your first thoughts and focus on something to be grateful for. Whether it's your family, a bed to sleep in, food to eat, or just the opportunity to crush the day, a positive thought to start the day will do wonders for your energy levels.

  3. Breathe: Take a minute to appreciate your breath. Sure you can do a 15 minute meditation if you want, but even a minute of focused deep breathes will do. Your breath controls your mind, body, and emotions. A moment of focused breathing will help you stay relaxed, focused, and ready to take on whatever the day throws at you.

  4. Drink Water: Your body has been fasting all night and you are dehydrated when you wake up. Drinking 500ml of water first thing in the morning helps to activate your organs and gets yourself out of the slumber state. 

  5. Exercise: It’s ok if you can’t get a full workout in. But it’s time to tell your brain and the 37 trillion cells in your body that it's time to wake up, move, and take on the day. A quick jog around the block, a few minutes of jumping on the spot, or walking up and down the stairs a couple of times will do the trick. 

  6. Get Some Sunlight: Biologically, we are designed to sleep when it’s dark and get up when it’s light out. Seeking bright light in the morning helps set your body’s circadian cycle. Step outside for a few minutes on a sunny day to absorb some of the sun's energy. And on the gloomy days and winter months, consider investing in a white light therapy lamp like this one to get some simulated sunlight.

  7. Make A Must Do List: If you don’t have a plan for the day, you might be wandering aimlessly without even realizing it. Either before going to bed, or early in the morning, write up a few things that you want to accomplish that would make the day a success. Get those done and you’ll have won the day. 

  8. Don’t Press Snooze: As tempting as it is to press snooze, those extra few minutes of sleep will almost always have you feeling more tired. The snooze button disrupts the sleep cycle and leads to sleep inertia that can have you feeling groggy for up to 4 hours after you wake up. 

  9. Avoid Your Cell Phone: If you want to win the mornings, you have to forget about your phone for a bit. Your emails, social media, and the news can take a back seat while you prime yourself to take on the day. Keep your phone away from your bed so you aren't tempted to reach for it first thing in the morning.

Every morning is a new beginning and how you start each day matters.
